What if I told you that there aren’t two types of people in the world- there’s sixteen. A few days ago, I stumbled across the MBTI, which is the questionnaire that had an impact on how I view myself. MBTI stands for the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator. The MBTI is essentially a personality test. But, it isn’t a Buzz Feed quiz like “Which Disney Princess Are You?” It’s much more accurate since it’s a questionnaire in which you indicate your preferences.The test results are a type, which is a combination of 4 letters given to you. Each letter is given based per category and you get one letter or another. The four dichotomies the MBTI measures include where you orient yourself, how you synthesize information, how you make decisions, and how you structure your life.
Like our fellow peers, the first thing the MBTI judges you on is your social ability. In fancier terms, the first criterion you are typed under is where you orient yourself: the outer world or the inner. Those who focus on the outer world are typed as Extroverts by the MBTI. Extroverts do enjoy being around other people, but they aren’t always super outgoing and social butterflies. Really, an extrovert gets energy, which is essentially an increased dopamine release, from being around other people. On the other end of the spectrum are the introverts, who focus on their inner world. tend to not be as willing as the extrovert to socialize for hours. Introverted types lose energy when they communicate with others, since they derive their energy from themselves. Socializing is an activity that drains the introvert, which is the exact opposite of an extrovert, who gets energized from socializing. To restore their depleted energy reserves, they spend some time by themselves by shutting down and withdrawing from society.
After figuring out your social life, the MBTI figures out the way you process information. Those who process information in a more concrete manner are known as the Sensing type. Sensing types observe information objectively, and create meaning from conscious thought. Sensors pay attention to “immediate data from their five senses.” They tend to look at most things as if they are black and white. Sensing types are the surface of a sea, and therefore more practical. The opposite of a Sensor is an Intuitive type. Intuitive types aren’t psychics, and do not get dream about the future. In reality, Intuitive types look at information more holistically. They look for the wider context for things and are far more conceptual. They do not care for details as much as the Sensor, and are thus more abstract. They are always in search for a deeper understanding of the world around them.
So everyone can process information literally or figuratively, but how do use your information to make decisions? Thinkers are objective, and do not care for the emotional effects a decision has on a person, unless it hinders progress somehow. This makes them sound heartless, when in actuality, thinking types do care for other people. Thinkers are just much more comfortable with logic than emotions. The Thinker views emotions as irrational, and tries to make the best decision using its best friend: the brain. If you take other people and subjective factors into account while making a decision, you are a Feeler. Values and participant impact are considered when a Feeler makes a decision. Feeling types are more aware of the social effects decisions will have. Feeling types are people that are good with other people. They pride themselves on their empathy and compassion. They are caring and kind, and think about others. They’re kind of like the Hufflepuffs of Muggle society.
The MBTI understands the way you are mentally, but in the last letter, focuses on the way you live your life. If you prefer a more structured life, you are a Judger. Rather, judging types enjoy a structured way of living. Judgers like to make plans. They like to follow rules and laws, since it creates structure and balance in their world. Judging types tend to dislike change. If you aren’t a Judger, you are a Perceiver. That of course is not default option, since you are a Perceiver if and only if you enjoy having an adaptable lifestyle. The Perceiving type is more flexible. They tend to work spontaneously, whenever they get bursts of energy or inspiration. Perceivers are more adaptive. They wish for themselves to change according to the world. They believe that they must live in accordance to the world, instead of reconstructing one to fit their desires. They don’t like scheduling appointments immediately, since they could miss out on something better.
